Hi. Here's a pic of an 1888 Morgan I have. The coin's been in my family for years and was originally plucked from circulation. Don't know its history, therefore. My grandmother did like to put coins (which were all silver then) in holy water in her home and leave them there for years. Don't know about this one. This doesn't look like toning to me nor any substance that can be removed. It looks like something reacted with the surface metal in a bad way (the reverse is normal). I know it's not unique, either, because I saw somebody else's post on an ad with a buck very similar. Anybody familiar with this? Is it devaluing and how could it be prevented? Thanks. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Carry it around in your pocket. The black stuff should wear off in due time.

I find that toning very nice ...but if you don't like the way is it ,dip the coin in acetone. At your own risk.

Acetone won't hurt, but I doubt it will have much of an effect.

, need to dip it in a silver dip for a few seconds at a time until desired look . Rinse with distilled water . Your coin is not damaged .

Try testing with a coin silver dip using a Q-tip and a tiny dab in a small darkened area, perhaps near the rim.

Hmmmm...this doesn't look bad to me. Depending on how accurate the pic is, it could just be natural toning which some may find desirable. I'd like to see a pic of the reverse. Whatever it is maybe take it to a show or trusted LCS and get an opinion in hand. You can't judge a coin with a pic like this...you need to be able to rotate it and look at it in various lighting. So please take your time before dipping it and not rely on the forum too much as it really needs to be seen in person. My $1 worth...

If you like the toning, then just keep it the way it is and enjoy, nothing wrong with that. If the toning disturbs you, then I suggest a dip in pure acetone and then a short bath in distilled water - not holy water.

Thanks for the advice. Can't really say it disturbs me much as it's a common date and common condition but I am curious. It almost looks like paint up close. If it weren't for seeing another one almost identical, I may have thought it was unique. I do have some old dip I used to use on my silver Wash qtrs (those things always looked BU to me because of the design so I figured they may as well be shiny, too- lol.)

Here's the rev. I had the pics ready because I'm running an ad to sell it with some others. On close examination, it's more interesting than I thought. One can see the flaking of metal beginning around the left middle, as well as a couple of black spots forming.
