Is the specimen coin finish from the 80's different from what the current specimen finish is?

Yes, Specimen Finishes have changed several times over the years.
In the 80's it was Brilliant Relief on a Brilliant Background
and has changed a couple of times since then.

Yes. They used to have a brilliant finish, looking like PLs. Now they have "a brilliant image relief against a matte or lined background", taken from the RCM website. I don't know when they changed over, but they enhanced the lined background (fields) in 2010.

Thanks! I have never had an older specimen before. The pictures on ebay kinda look more PL than specimen to me for that time peroid. That's the reason behind the question. I do like the specimen finish that was found in the 96 PL set.
