I've been collecting currency for a couple years now after having collected coins for decades. What an eye opening and enjoyable experience! Anyway I'm considering either joining the SPMC to get their journal or subscribing to the Bank Note Reporter since for me there just not quite enough currency coverage is each month's Coin World and The Numismatist. Are there any pros or cons to either or both? My interest is general US of all type and I enjoy historical articles etc mostly. In depth articles on a certain plate used for a certain note are not as interesting as I don't collect varieties and I'm not that interested in world currency (yet). I've been reading a few back issues of the SPMC journal on the NNP and have found a number of good issues from the past - just wondering in today's world which would be the best investment. I can't afford a subscription to both at the moment. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The BNR is basically devoted to US currency, with several interesting columns each month and a comprehensive valuation section on all small and large size US notes. The SPM journal is quite different, commenting on the notes of different countries around the world as well as the US, without a comprehensive valuation guide. They are quite different!

SPMC membership is an investment in yourself and your education in the hobby. Go for it! You'll not regret it.

I joined the SPMC in 2016. I had joined other coin centered clubs all have a newsletter or journal that is sent to members and wanted one for paper money. I did the dual online and print option because I like getting stuff in the mail.

Even before I got the first journal of my subscription in the mail, I had accessed past journals which at the time were only accessible on their website. I knew it was money well spent.

I will say that in every journal I've received I have found something worth reading. I have learned that reading about areas I don't collect expands my knowledge even if I never start collecting in that field.

I haven't subscribed to Bank Note Reporter since 2009 or 2010. I cannot offer much on whether it is worth buying a subscription to.

Personally, I'd pick SPMC. If you only want a digital subscription a year costs $20 and consists of 6 journals plus access to all the past journals--I believe the last 5 years are only available on their site.

My opinion is that the large auction companies essentially "own" BNR as the major advertisers. The majority of articles are about upcoming auctions, and there's very few in-depth research stories, the exception being Peter Huntoon's articles. I stopped subscribing years ago.

The SPMC offers much more value for your dollar, including online access to all the back issues of Paper Money magazine. That's a terrific resource in learning about all aspects of the hobby.
