I came by this Friendship/Peace Medal searching a private collection -- thought it was probably like so many reproductions on the market. Problem is, researching, I'm unable to find another like this one.

Amateur me, I figured I'd better look to those with more experience before discarding it. Has anyone seen a medal like this one? Is it an original, reproduction, chain end for a ceiling fan? Thanks for your help.

Images of the token are included, but here's some text information.

1. Obverse has bust of George Washington with text, "George Washington, The Father of Our Country." and "1789."

2. Reverse has clasped hands and crossed peace pipes with text "Friendship," "The Pipe of Peace," and "1789."

3. Reeded edge.

4. Weight 66.4 grams.

5. Diameter 62.65 mm.

6. Thickness 4.57 mm.

Thanks again for your help with this.

Let me locate my book on Washington themed items and see if this is listed.

Edit to add the following information from pages 78-79:

Indeed this is a Peace Medal listed in the book Medallic Portraits of Washington 2nd edition.

The authors of the book have it listed with the heading of "Private (Nebraska) Treaty Medal

Struck circa 1890-1900

Baker-173M struck in copper; 173N struck in white metal with a reeded edge; 173P struck in pewter; 173Q struck in pewter with a larger size

Yours has the characteristics of Baker-173N. Approximately 10 known (at the time this was written nearly twenty years ago). The only value listed was $600 for an example in EF.

Authors state "all quite rare"

Two paragraphs provided after this provided a little more information which I will paraphrase.

Originally thought to be struck circa 1845 evidence now points to Nebraska near the turn of the 20th century. Francis P. Prucha, an Indian in Pender, Nebraska owned molds from which at least pewter ones were made. Claimed to have sold a bunch to Indians in Oklahoma.

This should give you a starting point at least.

Ah ha found a sold listing from a Stacks Auction in August 2016: Session 6, Lot 4018 https://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?...&lot=2406303

VF, environmental damage and cleaned sold for $160 against a $500 estimate

The medal in the original post has a more pleasing appearance (to my eye anyway) and I would estimate it to bring more than $160.

MV, you have been most helpful! Thank you! One thing unique about this medal is the obverse/reverse orientation. Whereas the typical medal orientation seems to be head to head (flipping on the vertical axis), the obverse/reverse on this Treaty medal is typical of a "coin orientation" (flipping on the horizontal axis). Do you have any additional information about this? Also, I appreciate the referenced Medallic Portraits of Washington and Stacks Auction. I'll be checking the local library to research these. Thanks again!

This is what I have observed on the orientation.

The one in the Stacks auction the hole obliterates the "N" of Friendship.

I found another example sold back in 2006 by Early American History Auctions https://www.liveauctioneers.com/ite...-peace-medal it too has the "N" of Friendship obliterated by the hole

In the auction description for the above, that medal had a plain edge and said it was Baker173N var. (I think var. is short for variation, but don't know 100% certainty) Prucha-64

I went to the auction website where the prices realized were available and looked up lot 958: $1,041.25

Presidential Auctions/Joe Levine sold an unholed example of this medal in his Auction #78 lot 63 held June 5th through the 8th, 2008. https://archive.org/details/auction...tyei2008pres the lot description starts on page 17 and 18 has the image and remaining text

I know this is a lot of information jammed in one post.

I am signing off for tonight will check this thread again. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Checked the sites referenced--led me to numerous other sites. Making progress; however, the obverse/reverse orientation continues to elude me. The 1789 George Washington Peace Medal orientation I have is horizontal. The hole is between "THE" and "FATHER" on the obverse, and fairly well obliterates the "O" in "OF" on the reverse. Suspended, the obverse would be right side up. The reverse would be upside down. H-m-m-m... I'm continuing to look through the references you've provided as well as the further references they provide.

It's an interesting search and I'm most thankful for your input. I will continue to post as I find additional information. Hope you can also continue to do so. One thing I'm including in my search is information about error medals that may have been produced. Perhaps the obverse/reverse was mis-oriented when stamped. Just trying to consider all the possibilities in nailing down when/where this medal originated.

By the way, our local library didn't have Medallic Portraits of Washington, but is trying to source a loaner from somewhere else. Anxious to take a look at it when it comes in.

Long delay updating this post, nevertheless...Based upon research suggested (thanks, MV!) I decided to send this to NGC for authentication. As it turns out, this is a c.1800-1900 B-173N 63mm Private Treaty Medal. XF Details, Damaged. Interestingly, I had occasion to visit Mount Rushmore a little over a month ago. One of the display items in the museum there was a private treaty medal like this one. Only difference was, the one at Rushmore had a length of ribbon through the hole in the medal. I must say that was exciting to see! Anyway, I am grateful for the information and direction provided to properly research this medal. Thanks again. John H.

Your very welcome. I'm thrilled that the medal is authentic and that you have confirmation of the variety from NGC. Plus knowing an approximate grade level is beneficial.
