Hi everyone! I recently inherited this 1901 S Morgan dollar. I do not have much experience or knowledge of Morgan dollars so I'm at a loss with this one. There is a large capital D printed on the front of this coin. Any idea as to what it could be from? Thanks for your help.
It's a counterstamp. Someone did that with a punch so, technically PMD. Some people collect them, though. They only have added value if the counterstamp can be traced to the source. In this case, it's anyone's guess what it means.
