Once upon a time, as an eighteen year old in August 07, I was looking for a car, especially since I was going to be commuting to college soon. At first I wanted something fast and cheap, then changed my mind to something reliable that looked nice, not something that would break in a few years. This was of course mostly because I figured that a rough ride would not be fun when commuting 4 days a week. Though enthusiastic about my father's previous spontaneous offer to buy me a decent car if I finished high school instead of getting a GED (I had good grades in school, I just hated it with a passion), I was disappointed when I found out what a 'decent' car entailed. So after arguing awhile, we came up with a solution. He raised what he was willing to pay, and I gave him my coin collection as tribute, paid him the rest of my money (over 2000) and with those combined I managed to get at least some of what I wanted.

The deal was that I had a year to pay him back, and I already finished in April (about $4500). I have my own personal 'business' now and probably would have been able to buy the car myself within a year from today had I not needed one so badly for college. Anyone else ever put their collection to some practical use like this?

Bless great fathers. And I think I know where that collection will end up, eventually.
