a beautiful coin, a little wear on the obverse; a ding near date. It's difficult to imagine that this would have needed cleaning.
The first part of this style of coins ("Marengo") to show wear is usually the value.

scott3270 - Very nice coin. Looks real to me. I am not aware of a modern counterfeit version of this particular coin. It was a large production coin so numismatic premiums are still low. As a bullion coin it is small and would not attract any attention. Counterfeits of this size are scarce to rare as contemporary copies. If it is a contemporary counterfeit it would be worth MORE than an original - perhaps much more.

Condition using a US standard would possibly reach EF but I would stick with a nice VF using a stricter French standard. As to cleaning, it is difficult to tell. Recent cleanings would show under magnification so you are likely in the best position to tell.
