I recently purchased a cottage which ages back to the 1600's and discovered this coin between the beams, would someone please be able to shed some light on the country / year of origin of it please?

It's a jeton; a token used in counting houses by accountants who couldn't do math. I'm pretty sure this is part of the series from Nuremburg, from the late 1500s.

I agree with Finn, it is an old Nuremburg trade token.

This cottage sounds like a great place to go metal detecting. How much of a yard does the place have?

to the forum!

Since it is undated, no images or crosses or denominations, it is a token not a coin. Nuremburg issued many styles of Jeton during those years. What a story behind it tooo.

Very early Nuremberg cross-and-orb jeton, fictitious legends with Greek characters included, meaning this piece was most likely struck in the first half of the 16th c.
