In my regular search of ebay for Ikes and Franklins l noticed a seller that has an enormous inventory of raw toned coins. I normally stay away from toned unless they're slabbed and it's very obvious to me the seller mentioned coins are artificially toned which got me to thinking. Are there any or many that collect AT coins just for the originality or, lack for a better word, creativity?

Yes, there are a surprising percentage of humans who have no concept of actual value, and will without thought throw large sums of money at a seller simply because it's claimed that value is present. Every once in a while, but it's added up to dozens of examples over the years, we get to inform someone that they've just thrown enough money into the fire to make a couple of mortgage payments.

There used to be a web site called Toned coin collectors. Not sure if it still exists but sort of shows you lots of people collect those.

Try to explain to those who don't collect coins that you recently spent $50 or more on a penny because of some error, or that you paid $100 for a silver dollar.

My point is that we all have different interests and if one wants to spend their money on something so be it.

With respect to AT..... it's such a slippery slope for me... for instance someone who puts their coins in a book for 20 years and opens it up to see it full of toned coins... is that AT? What about a person who intentionally puts the coins in a book with the hope that the coins will tone? The act is the same only the intention is different... now is one AT and one legit toning?

I just recently pulled some coins out of a place that I stored some with the goal of them toning.... some turned out pretty nice... others very unappealing... but they all were different... I have no idea how one can tell the difference between AT and legit toning.. and perhaps that criteria needs to be established first...

I cannot disagree with the principle underlying that statement. However, even though you can pay $100,000 for a totaled Chevy Cobalt if you wish, reselling it down the road might be....problematic.

There can never be such a thing as "legitimate criteria," since one can effortlessly duplicate toning even the experts would call "original," and coins which toned by a process even the experts would consider "original" sometimes come out with a look those experts would still call "fake."

There is only "market acceptable" and "not."

Bingo.

The terms artificial toning and natural toning are meaningless. The preferred description is whether or not the toning is market acceptable.
