Hello- I am seeking some clarification of the uniqueness/rarity of the proof like reverses (Deep Torch Grooves) and if there is value above their base value. The reason I ask is that I have been searching through dimes that had been placed in jars in the 1980's by my mother and 50% of the 1969,1970, and 1970D have deep groves on the torches( 8 of 16). As such I am suspect that I either am not evaluating my dimes correctly or that they are not so rare.

I have attached some photo's of an example of what I am calling a deep grooved torch proof like reverse. Am I misidentifying this variety?

Thank you.

Nope, you're correct on this being a proof reverse. The proof reverses from 1969 are a lot rarer than the 1970's proof reverses and commands a much higher premium. The coin's grade will also highly depend on the premium value. This coin does have a premium, just depends on what I already mentioned. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. It is very helpful. I have such a high percentage of these reverses compared to normal's that I thought I was over-reading them. Appreciate your help.

You're very welcome. I am glad it was very helpful. That's awesome you found a bunch of them. I remember finding my first one ever. It was a 1970 P proof reverse Dime. I got it in change from a cashier. Is that how you found some of them?

My mother recently passed away and in the process of helping my father clean out the house we realized that they had literally thousands of coins in old bags, jars, cans, etc.. in old draws and closets. My mom had been a collector for 60 years and I think she always kept so many of her change coins intending that she would go through them. She did not even know how many she had in the end. I think she had a modest knowledge of varieties that she set aside, she saved more than she searched. I really enjoy learning about these and searching. Keeps me connected to her which is comforting for me. If I sell any I'll give the proceeds to my father like she would want.

Thanks again- I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I go through all these coins.
