I have recently started collecting modern English coins, so my father passed to me some old coins that were his fathers. Some of the coins date back to the 1700's, largely old penny type. However, one was of interest that appears to be gold, and looks quite old. My grandfather found the coins during his construction career, so I would think they would have come from the ground.

If anyone could tell me what the coin is, how old it is, and whether it has any value, I would love to hear from you.

Thank you in advance,

Matthew

It looks like a Nuremberg jeton of a type known as l'Ecu de France. If you use the search box, top left hand of this page and type Nuremberg jeton, you'll get any number of hits explaining how they were used.

It looks earlier than Nuremberg but French no doubt.Probably worth less than £10.A bit of history.

Not Nuremberg, French c.15th century I believe - interesting history and make a nice little sideline. Examples can be picked up cheaply too.
Rest in Peace

This type of jeton was certainly being produced in Nuremberg in C14th & C15th.
