Found this 1871 dollar in the gold exchange, and was wondering if I should buy it for 50 bucks? How much is this actually worth in this condition?

All wrong. Not the correct design for the year. 1871 should be a Seated dollar.

If I'm not mistaken, Trade dollars weren't minted until 1873, so it's probably a fake....sorry.

Ditto. Not made untill 1873. If a deal seems too good to be true it usually is!

I thought it looked weird too, like the fact that it looks like there is a reverse die clash under states.. wasn't sure if that's possible for coins minted in 1870s lol. Is it possible for real coins?

Die clashes can be found on 1870's coins, and on earlier coins as well. Another member just recently posted an 1814 half dollar with a clash.

Quote:1871 should be a Seated dollar. When I saw this topic, that is what I was expecting to see. I have been shopping for the Seated dollars to fill my 7070 and was curious to see one.

Hopefully you did NOT buy this...not even for a couple of novelty dollars.

Is it possible for real coins? If the coin is made in a press, die clashes are probably possible. I doubt you would find them on hammered coinage, and you may not find them on rocker press coins, but you will find them on drop press, screw press, and knuckle press (steam, or electric powered). Probably on hydraulic presses as well.

There is a pretty important, "Numismatics 101" lesson to be learned here. This design did not exist until years after the date shown on it, and the implication is that you need to be doing - like anyone operating out of areas where they already know their stuff - fundamental, ground-level due diligence before even contemplating a purchase. This is equally important to the experienced collector as the newbie. For instance, if you're completely comfortable with Lincolns and looking at a Bust Half Dimes for a typeset, you'd darn well better form a feel for rarities and grade price for the one you're looking at, or you're going to get taken. Be realistic about where you are and what you know. Be informed. Or be broke and disappointed.

Counterfeit.
If real, this would be a $150 coin.
