Please check out Lot #702 (Session 2) at: https://auctions.canadiancoinsandpa...rex-auction#It is my opinion that this is NOT a High 9. The base of the 9 should be even with the base of the 2 and the 9 should be spaced farther away from the 2 than the other digit spacings. The tail of the 9 is also not tapered like the real High 9 strikes. Do a search on CCF for photos of real High 9 strikes. Note that the PCGS population report does not list a 1929 High 9 in MS-65 RB, so it is attributed by the consignor/auctioneer, not PCGS (but I have emailed a PCGS contact to confirm this). https://www.PCGS.com/pop/detail.aspx?c=4299It is, however, a nice Doubled 9. But, it is NOT the Recut 9 variety (page 300 of the 70th Edition Charlton catalogue on small cent varieties), look at the lower tail. Here is the coin up for auction... Here is a real High 9. Zoom in on the photo and compare that one with this one. The tail of the 9 is another giveaway. http://goccf.com/t/123433

Good news for the 1929 9/9 variety? Might have to dig out my MS62.

The coin SPP pictured above - the one which auctioned - is the PCGS plate coin for the Population listing of "regular" 1929's in RB: https://www.PCGS.com/pop/valueview.aspx?s=30244Interestingly enough, while researching this post I found an unattributed High 9 in PCGS MS65BN sold at Heritage at what seemed appropriate grade price for the "normal" version, earlier this year. Wonder if the buyer knows what he has. I also found what seemed to be slight vertical variances in the positioning of that second 9, and seeming differences in the shape of the tail (which may be die and/or punch wear), none of which rose to the level of recognition as "High." I also noted at least three different recut 9's. A fool and his money are soon parted. Elementary due diligence would have quashed this one.

I barely have the concentration to limit myself to one series, much less an individual year. Not to mention insufficient scratch to acquire one Hozillion examples.

SsuperDdave....
I am sure the Heritage buyer knows what he has......it is now the one in a PCGS High 9 holder.

The owner moved fast, then. The cert number now returns as attributed "High 9." For once, Heritage's images are far more complimentary than PCGS', and show much more contrast even though PCGS imaged it between slabs.

I saw this too and was gonna post about it but thanks to a busy life and lack of a laptop, I absolutely forgot to! Good to see this thread, love your determination to educate and protect the rest of ccf! Little side note.. watch out for a high 9 I'll be posting soon
Feel free to call me Will.
