Would you rather have an 1886 Morgan dollar slabbed by PCGS and graded MS 66, or an 1886 Morgan dollar slabbed by PCGS and graded MS 65 with a gold CAC sticker? Please don't concern yourself with the series and the date, I'm basically trying to discern how much a gold CAC sticker is worth to a buyer, if anything.

For a specific answer examples for comparison would be necessary. PCGS and CAC have good reputations for Morgan's, but not so good on bust halves, as an example.

The coin is all I care about. TPG s are helpful.

For your supposition I'd still need to see the examples.

Since the holdered gold CAC stickered 65 suggests that the coin is high end of the 66 scale, and the holdered 66 may be a low-level 66, it would seem that all things being equal the stickered 65 has a better shot at being the better coin. Am I missing something?

The 65 gold CAC. They're REALLY stingy with the Golds especially at that grade level.

The old saw, "buy the coin not the holder" doesn't work if you don't consider yourself an advanced, or even intermediate numismatist and therefore depend on the knowledge of others via grading services. Aristarchus123's answer actually provides me with the best information (I'm assuming he's correct). My understanding is that a green CAC sticker implies high end of the grade. Therefore a green sticker MS65 is more like MS65+. I understood that a gold sticker means that CAC feels it could be moved up to the next grade and therefore an MS 65 might be an MS 66, but I thought maybe a low end 66.

Gold means they feel that it should move up at least one grade and really more like two or more and would sticker. Something like less than one percent of their stickers are gold
Rest in Peace

What if the MS66 Morgan is under graded? Eye appeal is everything...

Agree with basebal on this one...65 gold > 66 straight. I think you'll find the resale higher too.

I've not yet seen a gold CAC on a PCGS Morgan that wasn't in a rattler.

No contest. I buy the Gold sticker for myself, and I buy it if the intent is resale. That sticker means high-end dealers believe the coin a bargain at the grade. I'll take their word on it.

Green sticker means solid to high end. So a 65 green sticker could just be a solid no question 65, and not high end at all.

I would rather have whichever one I like better.

The answer to this question does depend on your intent. If you intend to resell, then the CAC is your choice. If this coin is to keep, well, you really need to look at each coin regardless of holder to make that decision.

If you look at auctions for coins that are CAC or gold CAC, prices are off the charts relative to the quality of the coin. Basically, I think people really overpay for the stickers, so I'd buy one without it.
