Are there any good coin shops (not just the big gold and silver places) in, or near, the Plano, Frisco, The Colony, McKinney, Far North Dallas area?

Lone Star Mint on 15th St in downtown Plano is "ok". They have a pretty good selection of stuff. Probably the friendliest owner and most knowledgeable clerks.

Alamo Coins on Arapaho and Custer in Richardson can be helpful sometimes if you catch them on a good day. If you have an aversion to cigarette smoke and cigarette smell don't waste your time going there. You can scrape the nicotine off the walls!

In north Dallas on Forest Ln (west of the Dallas North Tollway) is Dallas Rare Coin. It can be hit and miss. The owner and counter help can be cranky.

I believe there is a shop in the old bank bldg in downtown McKinney on the north side of the square. I haven't been there but my brother has a few times. He says it's nothing to get excited about.

Good luck!

That's good info, westernsky. Thanks!

If I ever find myself over that way, I'll try to check them out. I used to find myself in that area all too frequently to visit the DVSC hospital for our dachshunds' surgeries. Not in a good while, though.

If you happen to be over in Fort Worth area at some point, stop by CR Coins off Highway 26 in North Richland Hills, just north of Northeast Mall. Lots of bullion but also lots of coins and coin supplies, from bargain bin to slabs.

I bought several coins from Lone Star Mint many years ago, still have the flips, they were great coins but don't expect much in the way of organization. I paid $6 for a "BU" 1950-D Jefferson that came back from NGC MS 66 5FS, $18 for an 1854 Lib Seated 25c that came back VF25, and picked up a 1909-VDB in XF40 for $3. I have not been there in years, hopefully they're still nice folks. Owner was always willing to engage in conversations. At that time, if you paid cash, you got your change back in fun coins like V and Buffalo nickels, Wheat cents, etc.

Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange (DGSE) is mostly a bullion and jewelry dealer but they used to have a decent selection of higher end gold and silver coins.

Also in Ft Worth is Ft Worth Coin Company on, or near, West 7th St. I haven't been there in years but they used to have a pretty good selection.

Chances are better for me to visit Lone Star Mint in Plano. You really got some great deals, paralyse. Hopefully not much has changed since then.
