I was going to buy this, but I experienced technical difficulties as the auction was ending. I was going to bid $750, and it ended up selling for $590. I think I could have bought it, but for my internet being spotty. What do you think it grades, and was it worth it for $750? Pretty sure it was good for whoever got it for $590.

One last twist is that this coin's seller was the infamous centsles. Still was willing to pull the trigger, but didn't work out. Grades and problems as always appreciated. Thanks!

I too bid on this coin, the reverse might have been cleaned.

I'm seeing technical merit of a good EF but would never trust the surface originality of a coin from that seller.

i thought the reverse was the better side since it seemed to have most of the luster.

That's the problem, the Reverse has too much luster.

how do you determine that a coin has been cleaned by having too much luster?

The obverse field between the 2:30 and 5 o'clock positions looks to have had some repairs. Most likely some graffiti removal efforts is my best guess.

The coin was not slabbed....THAT in itself is a huge red flag! Just the name of the Seller (Centsles) sets off flashing red lights and sirens in my book!

Be glad your internet crapped out on you!

Thanks westernsky! I made some enhancements to the pics and found the following:

OBV: Looks like the coin may have been tooled at 2:30 to 5 o'clock as you suggested of a mark in the shape of a figure 8. Also, the rock liberty is sitting on appears to have a large, deep scratch along its left edge. That wasn't immediately apparent.

REV: The firld to the left of the eagle's head appears to perhaps have been tooled to minimize scratches or graffiti.

I won't have it in hand, so we wil never really know. Thanks to all for your helpful comments.

By "Luster" I meant "Shine", when a coin has too much "shine" for the grade, that is usually a good indicator of cleaning, for example, a VF/XF Seated quarter that is very shiny has probably been cleaned.

It looks dead and lifeless. The computer issues saved you from making a mistake. From these pics I can't tell if graffiti has removed or not. But why even risk it from a crappy seller? You can go out and find a nice original graded sld in a few months for $750. It just takes patience.

AU-50 or better sharpness, luster aside. I think it's very nice.

EF-45 details. I see at least two large rim bumps on the reverse that have been repaired.

The online Seller of this coin is not stupid. If he thought for one second that this coin would straight grade he would have sent it In.

I'm surprised it isn't in one of his own NNC slabs. He has no need to spend the money on a real TPG, given the percentage of the buying public he has thinking he's good.

Had this one on watch as well....lost interest once it went over $400. Sellers reputation makes me automatically think cleaned/repaired/altered.
