Not sure how much you have into it or what inconvenience it is mailing from the UK, but it might be worth submitting to ANACS and see what they say.

Is it possible the previous owner cleaned it because I definitely haven't. It doesn't look cleaned when you look at it.

That is an awesome coin! My guess on value is between $500-$600.

I'm terribly sorry to kill the excitement, but I think the coin could be a fake.
On the obverse, the denticles are really mushy and fused together, creating a very uneven wear pattern.

Looks genuine and lightly cleaned VF-30. I have a hole in my album that that coin would fit in :)

Quote: I'm terribly sorry to kill the excitement, but I think the coin could be a fake. Appreciate that input ... such is the tremendous value of the CCF members all weighing in. I'm still going with authentic ... had an 1886 PCGS AU50 in my set ... and while agreed likely cleaned believe the OP coin to be authentic.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

You know, if you're bent on it being real, why not take the $30 risk and send it to a third-party grader?
They are the ones who will be able to tell if the coin is real.

I wouldn't worry about it being a fake. Looks real to me. Not one of the more common coins being faked. Original Mintage was 3,326,000. Values run from about $275 up to over a few thousand dollars of US money. Yours looks about in the $400 USA money range. How much did you pay for that one?
