Are there any Canadian medal collectors able to help me with this beauty? I can't find another online and the only reference,
Canadian Diamond Jubilee Medals by R. W. Mclachan on Archive.org suffers from bad OCR scanning. The edges are so crisp and sharp you could cut yourself.
Obverse:
Laureated bust of the Queen, left,
1837 to her left, 1897 to her right.
Around which:
VICTORIA QUEEN. AND. EMPRESS
Reverse:
A shield bearing the arms of Great Britain ; outside of which a garter inscribed
TO COMMEMORATE THE. SIXTIETH. YEAR. OF. MAJESTY'S. REIGN
Around which is a narrow wreath of
maple leaves with CANADA at the top and the date 1897 below.
It is signed QUINT PHILA.
(S. H. QUINT & SON This is a firm of engravers and medallistsdoing business in Philadelphia.)

Bronze 38 mm.

This medal, in aluminum, was distributed among the school children of Montreal by the Star newspaper. The same medal was distributed in bronze and silver as prizes by the Montreal Exposition Co. at their exhibition held in August 1897.

Hi Dave, sorry I missed this when you posted. I'm still having no luck with the medal but, I've had a thought about your avatar. You may know that I have various linguistic qualifications and I've long thought that it looked vaguely runic. And indeed it might be if you rotate it 180 degrees.
Check out the sixth character in the Dalecarlian Runes.

That should keep you busy over the holidays. Happy New Year.
