i purchased a coin collection. I have started to go through this collection. I found this 50 cent coin marked as a mule. looking for information. could some one explain why this coin would be marked as a mule. here is some images of the coin. any help greatly appreciated.

That is the small beads, low relief obverse die. Most 1982 50-cent coins are of the large beads, high relief obverse.

I wouldn't call it a mule.
It is a variety, one of two issued
for 1982. Large Bead and Small Bead.
It is the more valuable of the two varieties though.

What was the intent, then? Was it a trial design not chosen for production?

In this case I think it was either an unintentional error in leaving an old die in the machine, or they wanted to save money by using an old die.
