I'm loving those pictures of coins you have. I inherited a good amount of silver from my grandfather as well, not quite that amount though. I had a blast going through everything to see what was in there. I hope to amass a bin of walkers similar to what you have there in the picture.

You've heard this before but once again, don't clean. If these were pulled from circulation, there is a good chance a valuable coin is in one of those bins. I would start with the silver dollars (1935 and before) and work on down. When you get burnt out, take a brake. This is a daunting task and may take more than a year but you don't want to miss a potential home run coin. Collectors like us are drooling and are jealous over your situation!

Now that is a project worth having. I know many of us will be looking forward to seeing pics of some of the coins you wonder about or you find to be uncommon to rare.

You've gotten lots of good advice here, take it to heart. I'd not touch the nickels or pennies until the silver is done.
Unless you need the money, I'd hang on to half or all of the silver, wait for the market to improve. You can take a couple of pounds of it in to your local coin shop now, but you can gain $1000 or more for every 100 ounces, by simply waiting and watching the market.
Do separate the foreign from the US, first off. Then as stated by others, start separating the types, years, mints, etc.

Quote: The plastic tubes are the best way to go for silver then? I suggested possibly using tubes because of the likelihood you will end up with many multiples of the same type, year & mm in worn condition. Say you have dozens of a common Walking Liberty half such as 1945-D and they are all in circulated condition, putting them in tubes would be way easier than stapling every single one in its own 2x2 when that's not necessary. I would individually holder the better high-AU to MS examples, especially for the more valuable dates/mm's. When you get the RedBook, it will be easy to see which dates/mm's are more sought after for each coin type. As a side note, don't take the prices listed in the RedBook as what you'll get when selling. Those are essentially full retail prices as if you were buying that coin from a coin shop and should only be used as a general guide and for comparison. Also, if you come across some that you're not sure of grade on, you can always post them here for opinions but, check out PCGS Photograde. You can use the web version or they also have an app that is simple to use.

WOW. You know you could just save yourself a lot of trouble by sending them all to me. Just take your time, sort them out as you like. Be carefull handling nice ones since the better the condition, the more valuable they are.

Quote: I was just trying to project how long it would take...... That all depends on you and what your goal is! If I was in your shoes I would take the suggestions of the members that have posted. They have all posted with your best interest in mind to make sure that you understand the importance of taking your time and doing it correctly. Again, it is up to you as to how long it may take and unless you are in dire need of funds, I, myself, would take as much time as needed. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, take a break for a few days or so. You do indeed have a lot of work to do and as mentioned by some of the members here, separate everything first, then decided where to continue from there. Just don't jump around! It can and will confuse and overwhelm you. Stick with one thing at a time until it is complete. Obviously your father had a passion for coin collecting and by you going through them you may find yourself adapting that same passion! Please keep us updated on your progress! I'm sure we will all be looking forward to you postings.

Quote: I was just trying to project how long it would take...... Is that in response to: Quote:You know you could just save yourself a lot of trouble by sending them all to me. ? Just in case, the "send them to me" is probably the most ubiquitous joke here. We would all love to be in your shoes right now as far as the coins. It's great to hear you have a RedBook on the way. It's definitely a comprehensive resource in a small package. I certainly look forward to your progress, pics, and questions. I'll try to help in any way I can but, I'm a pretty new collector myself compared to many here. It's somewhat of a shame that the decision to sell is being made outside of your control. Just make it clear to the others involved that this is not a quick sort-and-sell project. The more time and care that is taken, the better the results will be. Maybe even show this topic and responses to the other involved parties.

Red Book 2x2 cards. Still waiting on dollars and halves. Stapler. Wrappers for bulk clad. All in house. Surface of table covered in velvet. Stage One Complete. Broken down by series and silver grade. Tubes, 2x2 boxes, small bottle of acetone and currency bags are all ordered. What do you think of this? Have three, one in each grade this being the highest.

Can you get an clearer pics? Those are too blurry to really determine anything.
