I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet. Highest graded 1859 Brass Cent...and yet, it doesn't look like any brass cent that I've ever seen. I'm having a hard time believing this is a brass cent. Thoughts? https://coins.ha.com/itm/canada/wor...ption-071515Edited by canadian-varieties 11/09/2017 01:46 am

It also has a Haxby die pairing like none of the other brass examples... I have no idea where they are getting this information though... it is not true. Quote: A technical pattern which saw some use in circulation... One would assume, that a coin that valuable would have been subjected to an XRF analysis prior to slabbing...

Quote: One would assume, that a coin that valuable would have been subjected to an XRF analysis prior to slabbing... I sure wouldn't want to bid on it without knowing the XRF analysis. (Not that I would bid on it anyway. It's way out of my price range.) I don't think NGC was very accurate on the grading. I don't think it is anywhere near AU.

how many die pairings are there for the brass cents?
If it was an alloy problem, I'd imagine it only happened once...maybe twice? so one or two die pairs?

With the vine gaps at 7 & 13, this is a late strike in 1859. It doesn't look right to me. I'd say that there are 11' pole marks all over it until I see an XRF or other alloy analysis. Now Rob seemed to have a pretty good handle on who had a brass and in what condition. I wonder who owned it.
It definitely IS NOT a pattern cent, as Heritage advertises.

So far, I'm having a difficult time with the coin at Haxby's resource, and attributing 1859's isn't usually difficult for me there. It's an extremely LDS die pair, evidenced by the "drawing" of the obverse letters and some reverse leaf tips towards the rim, meaning one should suspect that any die cracks would be at their largest (and any repunching at its' weakest through wear). The only candidates I'm finding for the appearance of the stem to Leaf 9 - note it intersects the leaf above where botany would expect it to join the midrib, which narrows choices down - tend to have identifying cracks which ought to be visible.
Anybody have an attribution?

Super rare coin if its legit. I would say its a VF-20 though. AU should show tons more detail in Queen Victoria's braid. Terribly overgraded in my opinion.
