With the fees being what they are you would get more if you sell your gold to a reputable refiner. With fees being what they are you can purchase gold for less from a reputable dealer. No worries about scammers, fake bars, ect. So why do so many buy and sell gold on ebay?

There are sometimes better deals on ebay from the same seller group that sells via their stores and websites. Said deals are not on their websites. I do not actually have a good explanation for this, but APMEX, Bullion Exchange, JM, DBS, and GoldBureau all sell on ebay and sometimes thats where their best deals are.

Quote:Why do people buy and sell gold on ebay? For the same reasons people buy anything on ebay. It may be for convenience, it may be their only option.

I suspect that the big names on ebay are not paying fees even remotely close to what the small timers are paying. I have no proof of this other than the fact that they seem to be able to sell at a price too close to melt that if normal fees were levied, they would be losing money. From ebay's perspective, they want these big sellers -badly. Makes sense that they would give them a break.

Considering some of them have had deals with ebay before where they could use ebay labels in their graded products they have almost certainly negotiated their own rates

It makes perfect sense for ebay (and any company for that matter) to offer incentives and other discounts to high volume sellers.

ebay is a good place to try to sell fake gold bars or bullion coins that have a tungsten core. That is nasty for the honest private sellers, who wish to sell genuine products. Always check and confirm the reputation of the seller first. The stakes are much higher, when gold products are involved. If the seller is just an honest private seller, it is hard to confirm an honest reputation. That is WHY it is nasty for the honest guys; the dishonest pollute the whole reputation of ebay, and make it harder for the honest private seller.

For me it's more convenient to not list on ebay, wait for a buyer and then wonder if they will claim that I sent an empty box. I send gold to a refiner and get 98% of spot. I get paid within 10 days or less. I buy shot from APMEX and cast my own bars and rounds. Everyone has the option of buying elsewhere. Places such as APMEX buy many items below spot. I wouldn't doubt that ebay charges a lesser percent. I'm sure they also get an initial sale on ebay and then a loyal APMEX customer outside of ebay. I never checked but doubt that APMEX would sell anything for less on ebay than they sell for on their own site. There is a business in China that specializes in making gold plated tungsten bars, rounds and even gold nuggets. That fact alone is reason enough to not buy gold on ebay.
