Is it a VAM? Wish I had a better photograph system as well, could use some recommendations.

The answer to your question is yes and no. The date doubling is Mechanical Doubling from the minting process and the coin itself is a VAM, all Morgan and Peace dollars are identified by a VAM listing.
When doubling is flat/shelf like and reduces the size of the feature it is typically Mechanical Doubling.
