Poll Question
1976 Bi-Centennial Quarter: What caused the reduction of the devices near the rim?

Time to get you thinking caps on. This is not a major deep though process. But something that caught my eye when looking for images on the PCGS Coinfacts page.

So let the test begin. The devices on UNITED and QUARTER DOLLAR were affected. The coin was graded, but bother looking for this, as the information I'm asking about if an issue they doesn't affect the grade. So lets see what you guys come up with. It will be a poll answer and even an box to check for I don't know.

There are two answers that is acceptable. The others are fluff to distract you. LOL
But enjoy your test. There are no prizes for this, but the thing you will take home is know what this is.

Poll Choices
 Thinned planchet
 Die collapse
  Machine Doubling
 Incorrect striking pressure
 Broken collar
 Stained planchet
  Grease Filled Die

Try to keep comments down until many get the vote, so they will have a chance to think about this first.
Rest in Peace

A test on Friday? Come on Coop.

I didn't even see my guess of a partial participation procedure.

Answers:

Thinned planchet : Incorrect. If this were a thinned planchet, then the rim would also be reduced and not be raised.
1976-Bi-Centennial-Quarter:--What-Caused-The-Reduction-Of-The-Devices?

Die collapse: Incorrect. If the die had collapsed, then the field would be affected.

Machine Doubling : Partly correct.. There is a slight amount of this on the last few letters of dollar, but very minor.

Incorrect striking pressure : Incorrect. If this would have been an issue, the other devices on the coin would have been affected, but they are not. Just this area is affected.

Broken collar : Incorrect. If the collar were broken the only part that would have been affected would be the rim. Then it would have had a vertical line on the rim.

Stained planchet : Incorrect. While the coin is toning, the staining would not have affected the weakness of these devices.

Grease Filled Die: Correct answer. The devices are blocked with grease, not allowing the full taper of the devices to show. They must have been a wiped down on the dies and it removed some of the grease, but pushed it into other areas into these devices.

Coin damage : Incorrect. If this were coin damage, then the devices would show disturbance on the edges of these devices. None is present, so it was not the cause.

I don't know : You will know when you read then answers to this thread.

A nice informative thread Coop. Thank you. I must admit I answered incorrectly. I hope that doesn't disqualify me from receiving my prize.
