Denticles appear to be doubled on the rim, and the rim is also doubled by a recessed "line". It's not a step-like doubling on the reverse, if the second picture suggests that, it's following the concave curvature of the field near the rim. What is happening here?

The reverse somewhat looks like an incomplete clip, but the rim and edge diagnostics don't match. The obverse rim doubling appears step-like, and there's nothing visible on the edge.

There is an old thread with doubled denticles from the same year, but minus the doubled rim.

Is the rim (edge) of the coin completely flat and smooth?

Upon closer inspection, I saw this above the D of DG. I don't know if it's related, or PMD. The rest of the edge appears smooth.

Interesting! I'm always amazed when people like you find coins like this... how do you spot them?! Do you inspect every coin thoroughly?

Just quickly sorting through separating the nice stuff from less nice stuff, and the line through the denticles caught my eye. I can't be bothered to closely inspect things one by one. Good lighting always helps a lot.

I don't think so - a penny doesn't have a reeded edge. Also, they continue the denticles perfectly.

Definitely not a collar clash. I am thinking more like the planchet moved slightly at the beginning of the strike,

Just some very weird machine doubling-esque thing going on, SPP?

Yeah... maybe the pieces were getting a little loose on the press...

I can't say exactly what happened, but logic and superposition tells me the main strike does 'crosscut' those outside denticles (i.e., occurred after)...
