Okay here are the pics. I found this on and a few others I will be posting as well on a friend's estate sale listing. His family is having an auction. His grandfather traveled in western China and Tibet. Let me know what you think? Thanks!

Fakes of this coin outnumber the genuine examples by about 50 to 1.

Some fakes are much better than others, but without a picture of a genuine example with with you can compare your suspect fake, determining authenticity for good fakes is a lot harder.
Poor fakes usually do not need photographic comparison.

Usual tests:
magnetic or not
weight
diameter
thickness
XRF testing
clarity of detail

Destructive chemical analysis
A good thing for fakes, but not good for genuine auto dollars.

Not so silly as it first seems.
The British Museum has done this sort of thing with genuine Roman gold coins, albeit the group that they tested were all very worn.

That area between the inner ring and outer denticles directly below the car is fishy to me as well as the coloration and the fact that I am pretty sure another coin listed from the same estate auction is counterfeit....sigh

@bsteve74, this prior CCF thread may be of some help in comparing this piece to a real auto dollar. You should be able to notice several discrepancies in the details:

The car featured on the 1929 Chinese Auto Dollar is a
"1926 Chrysler 3 window sedan".
Google Images in the "quotes" italics for a good idea of what the actual car was supposed to look like.
