I receive the PCGS Rare Coin Market Report and am comparing the quotes in the guide to the realisations on ebay, and there seems to be a large disparity between what coins realise and what is quoted in the report. What can account for this (as I'm from Australia, and don't know too much about the USA market)?

Simple: ebay is in no way qualified to be a viable indicator of the "true" market. Admittedly, it's a big market, but it's populated by buyers who have no concept of values, sellers who have no concept of sales, and sharks like me who don't strike unless the pickings are easy.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with PCGS' published opinions of the market, but a more accurate comparison would be with realized prices from places like Heritage and Teletrade.

Aren't those reports for coins in PCGS holders only?

ebay can be misleading in a couple of ways. One, people might not pay as much on there because they cant touch or feel the item, or there is the chance of getting a counterfeit from a complete stranger. On the other hand, sometimes there are novices out there who dont really know what stuff is worth and get carried away bidding. This could lead to prices higher than the market should bear.

I have purchased from ebay and Teletrade, and with Teletrade, I find the prices realized in Teletrade seem lower until you remember to add the buyer charge of 12% with $8 minimum, then the total for PCGS coins is usually very close +/- to that in the PCGS report IMO. Probably the CDN is a better source but it would be near impossible to find a true conclusion, as there is a lot of difference in what I would pay from an "ugly" PCGS65 coin and a "Wow" PCGS65 coin.
