Large Cent Melting Prior To 1920's

After the US went to the small cent in the 1850's the Canadian cent survived over 60 years in its large format.

Was melting an issue at the time?

Did copper prices remain low enough to where the large cent was still worth less than a penny as metal during that time?

Was the Canadian currency valued much higher than the US was during the period?
