Hi everyone! :-)

My name is Simon & I'm new to this forum. It's really great to meet you all!

I have had this coin in my possession for around 15 years (see photos below), and yet have been unable to figure out what it actually is! :-(

I appreciate that it is in pretty poor condition, but I have always been curious about its history.

If anyone could please enlighten me & help to solve this mystery I would immensely grateful! :-)

My very best wishes and many thanks,

Simon.

I believe you have a Jeton, or a late medieval/early modern counting token. They were used in the age when a good education was hard to come by, so the majority of accountants were illiterate and/or unable to do math without physical manipulatives. Making then coin-shaped allowed for easy stacking and handling, but they had negligible intrinsic value, so they could be ordered and used in bulk. They were frequently dropped between floor boards, or simply discarded when they became damaged.

People collect these, but mass production usually means the majority are worth less than a couple pounds.

The problem that Europeans had with accounting was that they did not have the mathematical concept of zero as an integer. This was learned later from Arabic mathematics.
Without this, accounts and sums needed to be worked out physically and this was done on a counting table, similar in design to a large chess board. Think of it as a kind of horizontal abacus. It was known as an exchequer. Hence the title of the highest financial official in the UK, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

It does look as though it has been modelled on a Liard or maybe a Patagon of the Spanish Netherlands C16th.
So it's probably around 500 years old.
