I have had this in my collection for a long time. I have never seen an "error" like this. Is this possibly a real minting error or just a manufactured fake? Any help is appreciated.

I agree, but still a fun, oddball find.

That is one neat PMD. The time involved to make that must have cost more than a dime.

Not much time involved in that at all. Where I work, we have a pneumatic punch we use to punch holes in stainless steel sheet. Just for kicks, I tried a dime in it. Punched right through. Then all you have to do is take the two pieces and stick em back together. You might need a little force to do it, but it can be done fairly quickly. It looked very similar to the one pictured. Works well on cents as well, but I didn't want to try a nickel and screw up the punch due to the extra thickness involved....

Unfortunately, I no longer have it. I think it ended up in a roll and back to the bank. Maybe I can make another if I get a chance.
