I'm pretty good with business strikes but proof varieties usually
result in a huge migraine for me. Could one of you proof wizards
kindly evaluate this mintmark for me? It looks identical to Coneca's
RPM-002 but I'm a Wheat cent enthusiast. If this were a business
strike I'd quickly say "Too much deterioration. Chunk it!" Heck, I
can't even make sense of Dr. Wiles' attribution of RPM-002 even
though I'm fully aware he's forgotten more than I will ever know.
I see the separation but my mind just can't accept it as anything
other than MD. Migraine ensuing.....help!

Note how the area in question is flat, shelf like and reducing the size of the mint mark? It is Machine Doubling. This happens on proof coins also. The proof coin are struck twice. But this one is not a RPM.

Thanks, Coop. Is it me or do most of the 1968S attributions for RPMs and doubled dies appear to be simple MD?

That year was the start for MD on the cents. 1968-1972 had many them those years.
