I bought about a dozen proof sets a while back. I still haven't had a chance to go through them for varieties, but I realized that many of the individual coins are valued more highly than the set as a whole. Is it ever a good idea to break open the set and remove a coin?

That depends on wheither you found error coins or Doubled Dies or varieties. I say yes if it's worth more individualy. Make sure they get in proper protection. Also make sure they don't get fingerprints as that will lower the grade and value.

Rest in Peace

Unless you go back to the early 50's there will be more proof sets than most collectors will ever need.

Depending on what price guide you are using the small difference in value between the sets and individual coins isn't made up for because of the hassle of selling coins for a few bucks, or less, each.

It depends on why you want to break it open. I agree with moxking that unless they are older sets, it's not worth it try and turn a very small profit on individual coins. If they are older sets, it would be best to keep them intact unless you found an error or variety that you want to submit for grading.

I've cracked several sets because I wanted the 50 States quarters and nickels for albums.

Thats a good way to fill up your Dansco's. Most of the clad modern proof sets aren't worth anything really anyways.
