Not far from my location, FBI agents arrested a man trying to sell stolen coins to a Pensacola coin dealer. I'm glad they got the guy and hope Mr. Talbott gets all of his coins back.

Information is taken from The Columbus Dispatch:

Shop owner helps recover 6 coins stolen in Hilliard

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Coins worth nearly $100,000 that had been stolen from a Hilliard resident in December were recovered this week with the help of a coin-shop owner in Pensacola, Fla.

Burglars stole a safe containing more than $1 million in coins and other valuables from the home of Robert C. Talbott on Shire Cove Road.

"Usually when coins are stolen, recovery is never made," said Bob Bruce, owner of the All-American Coin & Jewelry Co. in Pensacola. "I know what (Talbott's) going through. I had coins stolen from the shop April 7."

Bruce doesn't expect to see those coins again.

But when a man came into his shop Saturday with a 1903S Morgan silver dollar, Bruce said, he recognized the coin -- which he appraised at $20,000 -- as one stolen in the Talbott burglary.

"I keep a database of stolen coins," Bruce said. "I talked to the individual on the phone three or four more times. He presented us with seven more coins Saturday, and I told him I'd make him an offer Monday."

Bruce then contacted Hilliard police.

Larry Shepherd, a Cincinnati coin dealer who had sold Talbott most of the coins and is now executive director of the American Numismatic Association, verified that the coin was stolen, Bruce said.

The FBI and Escambia County, Fla., sheriff were alerted.

"Monday, I talked to the guy on the phone," Bruce said. "He kept trying to get me to meet outside the store. The FBI was wary of that, figuring he'd actually try to rob me."

Monday came and went without a meeting.

"Tuesday . we had a vehicle description, and sure enough he drove by the store four or five times before he came in," Bruce said.

The FBI arrested the man, Bruce said.

FBI agent Rob Cochran of Pensacola said the investigation is continuing, and he would not release any details.

"We're in the beginning stages," he said. "Disclosing anything right now might hamper what we're doing. A large amount of stuff was stolen in Ohio in 2007, and we're trying to determine the whereabouts of additional items."

Among the six coins recovered were a very rare 1918 Buffalo nickel valued at $40,000 and a 1926S Buffalo nickel valued at $20,000, Bruce said. Three other coins were recovered at another Pensacola shop, he said.

Columbus police detective Brian Lacy said 10 arrests have been made in connection with the Talbott burglary, one of more than 25 burglaries conducted by a ring. He would not give more details about the arrests, including the names of those arrested.

The group stole goods valued at $2.1 million and mostly sought out televisions and electronics, Lacy said. The group also stole about a half-dozen safes, he said.

No trials have been scheduled.

"We're at a point where we're finding out what they will help us with," he said. "We're lining them up. We'll put it that way.")"

Wow, can you imagine stealing one million dollars worth of stuff in just one safe?

That makes me wonder how people can "complete" sets of coins if some coins cost 20,000 dollars apiece.

Good for the dealer. We were just discussing safes last week, and this is the exact reason I don't keep valuables in my safe (they just take the whole thing). I also have to wonder why someone who had a valuable collection like that wouldn't do more to protect it.
