Just what exactly of a DAMAGED MINTMARK do you (the OP) not understand? Give me a high res closeup and it will be obvious. And NO, it is not a broken punch, pieces fall off the punch, not move around. The tensile strength of the punch is twice as hard as the die material, but more brittle!

I just wanted to say that I appreciate everybody and their input. I know there is no monetary value for this coin but I will keep it because I like how it looks. As far as sending it out it's not worth spending the money on it. I have an uncirculated 1972 half dollar it would be better spent on.

Thank you for making it clear, your opinions on the coin. This is why I joined the community and I will continue to listen to your advice, you are the pros as far as I am concerned.

Thanks again.

That's what collecting is all about! However, we do try to save others from wasting money on grading when it's unnecessary. The grading costs could buy a nice coin, after all.

I apologize for the somewhat misleading suggestion of a broken mintmark punch. I was pretty sure that wasn't the cause but, was trying to think of any reasonable possibility other than PMD.

Do stick around and keep posting interesting finds and questions! I look forward to them.
