OF PENNSYLVANIA'S BI-CENTENNIAL
OCT. 24, 1882 A bit larger than a U.S quarter. Gilt bronze although missing much of the gilt.  Seller's image. Actual color and tone is somewhere between the two. Fairly common, prices are all over the place from under $10 for one not as good as this to nearly $300 (asking price!) for an NGC MS66 example. Edited by 999fine

New to my Fairs and Exhibitions collection:
STATE FAIR OF TEXAS
OCT. 8TH THRU 23RD 1949
Featuring the newly-constructed Cotton Bowl bragging to seat 75,508
as well as representative Texas industries.
A uniface medal, made of copper (well it looks more copper than bronze) Diameter is 1-3/4 inches.
The 1949 Cotton Bowl game (Dallas) put the SMU Mustangs against the Oregon Webfoots.
SMU won 21 to 13.
The SMU team featured Doak Walker who won the Heisman, Kyle Rote and Norm Van Brocklin.
The 1949 Texas State Fair reportedly saw an attendance of 2 million.

The image shows both the seller image which I had to work with and what a little acetone, VerdiCare and a microfiber cloth produced.
This may be one of my better medal "finds" as I can find no reference online in spite
of several differently-worded searches. Ideas are most welcome.

Edison Profile
TNG's Edison presentation sent me looking for what I might find of interest.
Note this is a different profile than his grouping.
From what I found online I think it qualifies for inclusion in my collection of fairs and exhibitions.
The Edison Festival of Light is the largest festival in Southwest Florida and offers a variety of
family friendly events each February. The Edison Pageant of Light exists to perpetuate the memory
of Thomas Alva Edison. Although he lived in New Jersey most of his lifetime, Fort Myers became
the beloved winter home to the inventor. Edison established his winter retreat in Fort Myers
in 1885 and spent many seasons at his estate until his death in 1931.

1873 Elgin Watch Co.
Chicago Inter-State Exposition
R-IL-EL-8 This is an advertising medal from Elgin Watch Co of Elgin Illinois which is located about 35 miles northwest of Chicago. It was made in the Exposition Building in the first year The Chicago Inter-State Exposition opened. The Elgin National Watch Company was a major US watch maker from 1864 to 1968. A very similar medal exists with "Contribution to 1873 Yellow Fever Sufferers" over the watch face on the reverse. There must be at least 9 different Elgin medals that have been cataloged related to the watch company. There are some with "Father Time" on one side and have serial numbers. They might have been included with a matching numbered watch at the time of sale.  I just had to have this as I had been watching these various medals pop up over the past few years. The price was right for sure and the condition exceded my standards. I also collect pre World war II exposition and world's fair medals, tickets and ephemera. Pocket watches have always facinated me. When my grandfather died, I remember my grandmother showing me "Pop-pops Dollar Watch". It probably was better than the dollar watches of the day. It had a fancy factory level engraving and cuts on the case. When she died, my father inherited it. When he died my mother gave it to me. I had it for almost 20 years when my daughter married and I gave it to my son-in-law with instructions that he give it to one of my 3 grandsons when the time was right, and that that one should also pass it on as a tradition. I have two other pocket watches that are Walthams and also in working order. They will go to the other two boys I suppose.

OK so these "beer chips" as they are referred to round here have layed around long enough. So do some bar hoppin in PA with these and maybe you'll do the Pennsylvania Polka at the last stop. Never been to these first three, don't know where these chips came from? 5th Ave Tavern Williamsport PA Beer Token Flagstone Tavern Jersey Shore PA Beer Token Harvest Moon Lounge Linden PA Beer Token Mejo's Cafe Tamaqua PA Beer Token This came from a bar that hosted a rather exclusive crowd at the corner of Penn and Oak Street in South Ward Tamaqua PA. If you sat there having a beer, someone might buy a "round" and this was good for one drink of whatever you were having at the time. Mejo was the nickname for the owner who died sometime around 2000 and had battled cancer in his later years. He was a good man, different, but a good hearted guy. You could expect to hear country rock music coming from the closed blinds well into the morning at Mejo's. Jerry Jeff Walker, Linda Ronstadt, and Willie Nelson sing-alongs. I wanted to go home with the armadillo sometimes too. I know, I been there many times til the birds started chirping. (but that was over 33 years ago now)  Edited by TNG
