My question is why did it get so many bids to go up that much? Apparently the seller isn't the only person ill-informed.

In the exonumic community some items such as the encased field can lead to some crazy prices.
If you can find these easily this price might be high, but searches have no other examples available anywhere.
Plus, many encased only have a couple hundred made which disappear into collections for decades.
You really can't compare the exonumic fields to those of numismatics. Each token field is unique.

@moxking The listing was for a common circulating Canadian $2 coin, not exonumia. The seller's other items reveals many actual Encased Cents so, I think OP is correct in that he assumed this was the same while being unfamiliar with Canadian coinage.

That toonie looks totally normal to me. What exactly is "encased"?

Maybe it was because it is a rare "Aluminum and Nickel Toonie"

I agree with JimmyD. Maybe someone thought it was actual aluminum?

"The Force" -the reference to "encased" coin means the kind that have an added ring outside of the cent, usually marked something like "good luck penny" or "souvenir of...". They are part of the exonumia section of ebay.
