This may have been covered before but I haven't come across it. Why is gold so much more expensive than silver? Does it involve a greater scarcity in the case of gold (where silver ore is much more common in nature than gold) or is gold more difficult to extract and process than gold is this traditional or a matter of consumer preference (i.e., gold looks better as an ornament than silver so the demand is greater?)

There are many factors involved, scarcity, sourcing, perception, etc. The estimated ratio of gold to silver in the earths crust is somewhere between 1 Oz gold for every 8 to 10 Oz silver. Sourcing is probably another large factor. Only about 1/3 of silver is mined from primary silver mines. The rest is mined as a result of mining other products such as copper or gold. This allows those companies to use sales of silver to defray the costs of their primary product. Historically, gold has been more highly regarded as a precious metal than silver and this contributes to price differentiation. At the end of the day, there are many factors that go into the valuation of gold and silver and quite a bit of ink has been spilled discussing it. Browse around the web and you'll find many articles addressing this.

If anything, it is good to see others saying it was a good post.
