Hello everyone,

Today was a great day because I made my first purchase of coins for the purpose of preserving them, and also because I have recently learned that I am seriously interested in everything concerning coins. I picked up a 5 SBA proofs from 1979-1982 (in 2x2), A U.S. Mint 1974 Uncirculated 13 coin set (D&P), and a 1986 Liberty Prestige Set.

I purchased other coins for my cherry picking hobby as I am currently on a Lincoln Wheat kick. I was just curious on how I should store these coins. Everything is in original packaging except for the Susans, as they are in 2x2's. I am open to suggestions as far as what would be wise to purchase next. I plan to spend between three and four hundred dollars a month for the sole purpose of obtaining coins for future preservation. My only concern is the lamination error on Lincolns nose. I did not look carefully enough. I will next time.

Thank you for reading this and I am really glad I have made a decision to get involved in coins. It almost seems that this is becoming a way of life for me. I spare the details yet would like to state that the coins are paying for themselves after spending $500 on then over the past two months.

Thank you,

Mike H.

For one off or type coins I like Mylar 2x2s and then put them in an album like this...

And for collections I like albums such as this.

Bandsdean,. Albums from a Known Numismatic publishing house work well in both presenting and preserving your collections. For those oddballs, 2x2s and vinyl do wonderfully. I posted this the other day, I decided to make my own layout for the 7070 type set of coins. I have diferent coins to add and leave off due to financial ability. I hat a blank hole that will never get plugged! Here's my Large dollar page, used 2 1/2x 2 1/2" to handle the larger sizes and have room to use a nice labelmaker.

As long as the 2x2s that the SBAs came in look fresh, I would leave them there and put them in a 20-pocket binder page. Personally, I would free the 1974 mint set (assuming it's in original cellophane) and put them in new 2x2s and in a binder page as well. That mint cellophane has a tendency to haze and discolor the coins over a long period. I would leave the 1986 Prestige set as is assuming it is in the original mint packaging.

You've already received excellent advice on storage, so I would offer two other important suggestions for a beginning Numismatist.

The first is simple. Never buy a Coin unless YOU love it. Don't buy coins you will need to upgrade. Don't buy cheap coins because there is a reason they are cheap 98% of the time. If you see a Coin and your first impression is WOW, buy it if you can afford it.

Although I often catch flak for my second suggestion, it's important enough to face such arrows. The difference between a Numismatist and an accumulator is an active want list. Although it may take some time to find individual fields that you find fascinating, eventually you will find yourself settling on areas of particular interest.

I advise a want list of between 50-70 items. That way you always have something to search for and you will gain considerable knowledge about those items. Try to have a range of prices between easy and the highest at an entire months spending. That way you are buying a few coins each month.

No one else's suggestions, including mine, will likely be how you eventually end up collecting. But remember better quality coins will always be easy to sell while junk will always be junk.

By that, do you mean cutting the 1974 coins out of the original cellophane and putting them in cardboard/Mylar 2x2s?
