This could be artifact of the coin being harshly cleaned/dipped?

Image quality isn't good enough to tell if there is anything going on there other than the severe abrasive cleaning.

I can't quite tell from your pics whether there is doubling, but here's an IHC DDR for comparison. Note how the doubling produces clear separation in the serifs? That's one of the markers of a doubled die. There is also something called Longacre doubling that is easily mistaken for hub doubling.

thingee, I wish! --it's quite a dramatic DDR--the 1865 Snow-2 DDR. I keep looking for one.

Hi,

I agree that a harsh abrasive cleaning is probably the culprit. Often it is a wire wheel or a buffer polisher that creates the appearance of the polishing going all in one direction. Cents usually get that brassy appearance and the buffing causes some metal to move in relation to the direction the polishing wheel is spinning. The metal that has moved often looks like doubling.

i remember a "shop" class in Junior High school. Teacher's name was Mr. Randall:-) I was helping him polish brass pieces from an antique automobile that was being restored. With the brass polish and a buffing wheel, I made a lot of Lincoln cents look like this Indian cent:-)

Thanks,
Bill
