I'll freely admit that I knew I would not turn a profit on this lot, but I had to have this Quintillus!
Quintillus, about July-September 270
IMP C M AVR CL QVINTILLVS AVG, radiate and draped bust right
PROVID AVG, Providentia standing left, holding sceptre and wand; globe at foot, left (should be a T in ex.)
Not in RIC, Giard 10259

I'll go ahead and boast that this is about the finest Quintillus portrait I have seen outside of his very rare aureii that I would have to open a second mortgage to afford. Of particular note are the eyes, cheek, and overall less cartoonish facial characteristics. Unfortunately, the reverse is about average low quality artistry, but it is at least free of major problems.
For those not already familiar, Quintillus is one of the most ephemeral and enigmatic emperors. His brother Claudius II had become emperor by assasinating Gallienus, and the imperial titles passed to Quintillus seemingly without issue. Then, in a turn of events, Claudius' top general Aurelian was proclaimed emperor just weeks later, and it is said Quintillus slit his wrists to avoid civil war. The Historia Augusta claims he ruled for just 17 days, but his coins must have been minted for at least a couple months. Aurelian did not erase Quintillus from the record, but did not recognize him as ever legitimately holding office, so we don't know how long he was actually in power.
