I have seen coin pics for quite a while which are post edited to make the coins appear to "float" above a reflection on a surface below. Like this (image not mine):

Two questions:
1. What is this effect called (for searches)?

2. How is it done?

I'm not really into photoshopping so I do't know what is the techinal term for the effect.

But I'm pretty sure the "reflection" is just the image of the coin "flipped" upside down then put at a small distance from the normal image. Next put a dark line for the "horizon" and make the reflected image to fade to background color.

I agree. Photoshop gives me headaches with possibilities.

Can be done easily in Photoshop or Gimp.

The coin is placed on a new layer, rotated, repositioned and an elliptical radial gradient applied to the new layer. The reflected coin probably has an opacity overlay applied as well. The top layer is just the coin with a transparent background :)
