Hi, I was looking through my safe deposit box and came across this coin. The date is 1927, and is in package stating ms65 and numistrust corporation. The top of the coin says Liberty and the bottom has the date of 1927, with stars in between. The back has an eagle with 2 1/2 dollars labeled at the bottom. I wish I had a picture as this coin is near perfect. I was wondering if someone might know the value of this coin. Also, what type of appreciation, in value, would this coin have.

I just read the guide to grading coins and discovered that NTC wasnt a top tier grading company. I was wondering what experience you guys have had with them.

In general NTC (numistrust) is considered a lower tier grading service. They can be 4 to 5 points off of the standard grades issued by NGC, PCGS, Anacs, and ICG.
Really not a company that is accepted hobby wide.

For a base price, a 1927 Quarter Eagle has a value of $170.00 to $220.00

would the base price be of a coin with considerable wear? Mine has only one light scratch. I believe this grading to be correct. If so what would the value be?

The base price would be for an AU coin, and the $220. price for an Unc coin.

Not to sound rude, but the sheer odds of an NTC crossing over to a main TPG are slim and none.
However, in MS-65 the value would be $6300.00

Once again, I have NEVER heard of an NTC cross grading anywhere near the grade that they assign.

Hi Challenger

The coin looks very nice, I'm no expert at gold but I think somewhere around a 63 or 64, Depending on the grade at these levels, the coin could be 1000.00 to just under 2000.00 get a good day and it makes a 65 then ND's estimate of several thousand would be right .

This is just a suggestion, but if it were mine and I wanted to capitalise on the coin I would have it regraded by one of the top tier companies, just being in an NTC slab will hold the coin back on value.

PCGS,NGC or Anacs

After looking at the pics you provided, I think that you will be hard pressed to see anything over a MS-60, and there is a real shot at an AU-58.
To top it off, your coin looks as if it has been cleaned.

Here is what an MS-64 looks like: Take note of the sharpness in the details of the ponytail. Yours show definate weakness. Also note the sharpness of the headress. Again your coin has severe weakness in this area.

ND I gotta be honest, I dont see where this coin has been cleaned ?

and while I see a bit of difference in the strike between the two coins, I dont see the difference as wear.

Like I said I'm no expert on gold, and I defer to your opinion,, How about a lesson ? with an explaination.

Rick
Rest in Peace

ND, what a beautiful coin! Just think if it was a MS65 it would be a $75-90K coin. A bargain at $25-40K in Ms64!!!! You could send me this one as a very nice Christmas present!LOL Mike

Hi Rick
Start with the t of Trust and work from there. the lettering is not as sharp and the there is something not quite right with the feathers on the shoulder. I would have to agree with ND AU58 to MS60 but I know nothing about gold either so lets see what ND has to say.
