What would everyone grade this 16-D? I'm thinking about purchasing it. Does anyone see any problems or past cleaning? Thanks.

that looks like a vette1986 coin auction. Am I right? He always has red felt as a background....:-P I seem some hairlines in the devices and fields, so it seems quite possible. It might grade a G-6. It has a dark toned look though that doesn't seem as common on cleaned coins. I personally find that appealing. However, this date is highly counterfeited, so I would only recommend buying one that is authenticated.

Horizontal scratches on the obverse are suspect. Reverse, the D is clear, I'd bid on it, if I knew the seller was reputable. I just bought a 1916 D myself, waiting to get it back from PCGS. It was uncertified, graded AG 3 by the dealer.

Here are the pics from the dealers website:

Good luck, and keep us posted what you decide, and what it goes for!

lucifer, my "wish list" at collectors corner just popped up a 1916 D already graded by ANACS as VG8 damaged, if you want to take a look. It's at David Lawrence rare coins.....I don't think I'm allowed to post links yet. Asking $875 for it.

yes its a Vette1986 coin, he seems to have pretty good coins sometimes (I think he had better coins a long time ago) if the price was right I would probably bid on the item, he is pretty reputable as far as you know you will get the coin you are paying for

The listing says:

Quote:
One person may grade a coin as a Good while another one grade it as an VG

but leaves off that a rational person may grade a coin Good details-- Cleaned Scratched or Good Details--Whizzed Damaged or Good Details--Whizzed Scratched or some combination of details.

Personally I keep vette1986 on my "do not buy from" list but that's just me--it helps when looking through coins to just skip past the listings with the old red background.

Keep us posted.

Then thats that. I am only going to be buying this coin one time in my life and do not want to go through the hassle of having a cleaned or damaged coin. I like the way it looks but am not going to bid. I guess I am just going to have to buy a slabbed coin seeing as how it is the only guaranteed problem free way.

And JohnAP looks like you did pretty good their yourself, nice job..I'm a bit jealous.

This is the new one I was looking at.

I do not know if it would grade any higher by todays standards? I like it though but it may be stepping a bit out of price range considering I can get both the 42/41 and 16-D for what this is gonna go for :)

lucifer,

How much are you willing to spend? I'd estimate that one on ebay will go for at least $1,500.00, quite possibly a lot more. Have you checked dealers, like Collectors Corner? Here is a link to what they have available right now, except I see they haven't updated it recently, cause as of a week ago, the third one down is MINE! Should have it back from PCGS by next saturday!

Like I said in the other thread, I like this coin but I would be hesitant about any raw coin of this type being fake. E-mail him and ask if he add a little with the coin stating that it's authentic so that you can always send it to ANACS or ICG to see if it's real. With the hairlines you can always use it as a pocketpeice to remove them, but that just seems sac religious to lower a coin's grade just so it would "slab".

Ya I've been looking around at dealers and such, I mean I'm going to bid on that one, if I can get it on the cheap great. If it goes anywhere over 1500 I'm out for the count. I am probably just going to end up getting a certified AG-3 or G-4. AP you got the raw AG-3 he had? I like it a lot congrats again.

lucifer,

Yup, after a couple emails to make sure the 5 day return policy would not negate my right to return it after getting it back from PCGS if there were any problems with it. So far, they've been really good. They shipped it of to PCGS for me, with return address to me. I'll definitely post pics when I get it in hand! I'm thinking maybe a little better than AG3, but we'll see. I am keeping an eye on the second one on ebay...just to see how close I come.
