Picked up 10 rolls from the bank yesterday. These 2 LMC's came out of one of the rolls. Somebody get into their families coin collection, maybe? Anyhow, before I 2X2 them - guess the grade!
Seeing they came out of a roll does that automatically make them an AU grade?

The grade mint state or uncirculated does not actually mean the coin didn't actually get spent (circulated).

It means the coins shows no SIGNS of wear from being circulated.

Well that's were I would disagree. Mark Stated these came from his bank. Someone, somewhere has touched these/to "circulate" through a system. They came outta something then went back into to come out again, just what part of circulating coinage is that NOT?
ickiness aside, too much "bag chatter"(circ?) On 71d, this wouldn't make MS60RBb barely outta OBW. Now 72p is a lot nicer, say MS63RD (maybe RD, looks paginated?)

I'm afraid I have to agree with Nss-52 on the uncirculated definition. You can't tell where a Coin has been unless it comes directly from the mint.

After that, the only grading criteria is how it looks.

62 and 65 both red.

Mark, I'm not sure what Crazyb0 meant by it in reference to coins

As to your question, that is the simplest definition that I could find.

I suspect that his auto-corrector is replacing "patinated" with "paginated" -- the closest approximate English-language equivalent.

Most collectors would and do use the adjective "toned"; "patinated" is mostly used as a verb and its usage is somewhat professorial, as though you are describing a bronze sculpture, a chemistry experiment or an archaeological relic.

Mark and Toots, el cheepo likes to correct the words I use, I used "patinated" and it was auto corrected...the procecess of natural patination, or for those others, the patina, the dirt, oils and corrosion on antiques!

As to others, I stand on the circulated comments...it would be impossible to get a 1972 coin in an uncirculated 1971 roll, it has to have been distributed to be put up. Besides, send those to NGC and see what you get. I'd rather say AU59 slider than get an MS60 "Altered Color" or outrigight "Detail" grade!

Awe, darn auto correct sometimes makes more mistakes than the person typing.

You guys know I have to agree with crazyb0 .Those 2 coins had to be handled numerous times by the time they got to that bank where Mark picked up the rolls . Remember these are all raw coins , 71-S AU-58 , 72-P AU59+ .

This gets tricky. So if I bought these in 2X2's from a coin dealer then they would be considered MS? Even though the dealer theoretically could have plucked them from a roll and holdered them? Or are you saying all raw coins are AU until designated as MS by a TPG?
