Hi all, I recently bought this coin for around $60. I was wondering what you think of the coin and the price I paid, as this is my first draped bust cent The coin has a gripped edge so I think it's the 1797 reverse of 1795 gripped edge variety. I would have avoided this coin but if you're happy with your purchase, that's all that matters.

Because of its age it may grade higher than AG, possibly a G4, just enough detail left. But it would garner a good attaboy, would get slammed as a "Details, Harshly Cleaned", meaning damaged goods. While I wouldn't kick it outta my collection, it won't resell to a savvy collector for what you paid.
Hopefully it's real, appears it may be, but one never knows anymore on raw early Colonials.

As you advance in your collecting pursuits there may come a time when a damaged (cleaned) coin will no longer fit in your collection. Everyone has a tendency to try to buy cheap, but coins that are cheap are cheap for a reason. Once you narrow your want list down to specifics it will be easier to determine what grade you will accept and what price you will pay. The single best thing a newer collector can do is join us  . The second best thing is read a lot. The third best thing is make a want list that evolves as you do.
