I have a 1857 Upper bank of Canada penny with a die crack showing as others have found under the "A" in "CANADA" but it also has a big bite out of one side.

is the missing side post mint damage ( PMD) or possibly a defective planchet minted error coin?

Broken off after mint, rest of coin is fully struck, you'd notice loss of detail, similar to Blakesly effect on opposite side of coin, like how much metal is missing in a clip. The denticle's go right to break. Might have been a weak planchet that when used as a prybar...broke.
Rest in Peace

I can see why you would ask. Although it is PMD, it is an attention grabber.
