It has been quite a while since I posted about national bank notes in this forum. I saw one on ebay that provided the spark for this thread. At first national banks were limited to numerical titles, e.g. First National Bank of... several established bankers scoffed at this requirement because that meant giving up their established banking house names. The law was changed and the result was a variety of titles. One way some have collected nationals is by the bank title featuring occupations. I've included industries as some titles are much broader than an occupation. For example, concrete or granite. Using Heritage Archives as a beginning point, I compiled a list and while I would like to think I got them all, I am sure there will be some I inadvertently missed. Next, I decided to create images of these. From the above one can see that about a third of the bank titles feature the word "and" between two occupations. The most popular variation being: "Farmers and _______" Some of the more unusual ones: Telegraphers, Boatmen, Jester Issued currency comes in large size or small size depending on the bank with some banks issuing both. One exception to this concerns the "Bankers World's Fair National Bank of Saint Louis" Charter #7179 these notes were all redeemed back then---the proof 50-100 sheet is in the Smithsonian collection. Perhaps this rather lengthy post will inspire you to take a look at national banknotes or renew your interest. Happy National-collecting! -MV

I had the Farmers and Drovers title (it's located in the second image under the Jester) but missed the Jewelers.

Beryl the Brotherhood title is one of my favorite titles as I have a soft spot for trains. I think this is the longest title ever used by any national bank. Later being shortened to Engineers.

Meadowview, that's a terrific compilation of bank names! I recall seeing some of those when I was participating in the transcription project for BEP certified NBN proofs for the Smithsonian. Here's one of my favorites on a $500 proof...
