All,

I am just starting to look into a Peace collection..

How can you tell the strength of the 'Strike', which I have been told are key for Peace dollars.

Does someone have some examples of a 'strong strike' vs. a "weak strike" for Peace dollars to use for comparison purposes.

Also, for the 1921 Peace, I see people keep referring to it as "high relief". What does this exactly mean versus the "regular relief" coins in the rest of the series? Is it the 'depth' of the coin (details compared to surface of coin?).

Thanks as always for all the help...

Regards,

Michael

High relief for the 21 is a different process of striking the coin. 21 was the only year they did it and they got lackluster results with the strike so that is why the discontinued it after 1921 and for a very few 1922 pieces.

Peace dollars are usually nicely struck from the Philly and Denver mint. There are always exceptions (worn out dies, strike through, etc). San Francisco issues seem to be the biggest issues regarding strike. Example: Issues from San Francisco dated 1922 and 1923 usually have nice strikes. While issues dated 1924, 1925, 1927, 1928, 1934, are usually weakly struck or just have average strikes.

Basically Peace dollars are a nice series but are very difficult to find in high grade with superb strikes. Sometimes you gotta settle on a weak strike to fill the gap. I did it with my 1927 S PCGS 63 cause it was fairly priced.
Rest in Peace

Go to Heritage. Put in Any date/mm. Go to sold archives. Filter most recent.

You will see dozens or hundreds of any year/mm in any grade.

You can also filter to a specific grade.

Look, examine, then do that for as many examples as you can.

WRITE DOWN your findings. If you find super strikes copy and paste to your own grading/strike placement.

WRITE down sold prices for each coin. Try to determine why specific examples sold high or low. From those numbers list the lowest price for the grade, the average price, and the highest price. When it comes time to buy you'll have a great idea about what the coins are actually selling for.

Do all that and you will know more than most.
