This is almost certainly not a coin die, but maybe a process in the production of the dies themselves, so goofy things goes missing at the RCM during the 40's too. Still kind of interesting !

Looks more like someone was painstakingly trying to create a homemade pair of dies, by sinking a real coin into softer metal - perhaps to strike some 1944 Tombac 5-cents.

This auction house is in Midland, Ontario, and if these were indeed a legit pair of RCM non-cancelled dies, this seller would have been directed to Steve Bromberg or Sandy Campbell, who probably would not hesitate to write a five-figure cheque for the pair...
