I have two 1970 D pennies with vastly different mintmark positions. The one is an odd looking D Mint mark well down on the coin. The other mintmark is the usual style but in the field of the date!
I haven't seen one this high before.

The mint marks are added to the dies until 1989. In 1990 forwards they are part of the dies design. So being added br hand, they will vary in locations, which are a handy marker for varieties.
Rest in Peace

There are RPM's that have secondary marking in the gap between the coat and rim, some secondaries have portions mixed within the date. The general rule is anywhere within the field below the date. All depends, since the mintmark was punched by hand last in all the working dies. Just how tipsy the mint employee was at the time just might have had a thing to do with it.....well, you got one better?

Drats, again!

Thanks Guys. I have odd ones on the silver quarters tilted and left or right, high and low but this one up in the date is the highest I ever came across.
