How Far Apart Or Close To The Date Have You Seen The Mint Mark On A Penny?

3193zd Valued Member United States 292 Posts	Posted 12/19/2017 8:46 pm I have two 1970 D pennies with vastly different mintmark positions. The one is an odd looking D Mint mark well down on the coin. The other mintmark is the usual style but in the field of the date! I haven't seen one this high before. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 12/19/2017 8:52 pm The mint marks are added to the dies until 1989. In 1990 forwards they are part of the dies design. So being added br hand, they will vary in locations, which are a handy marker for varieties. Report this Post to the Staff
Crazyb0 Rest in Peace 10197 Posts	Posted 12/19/2017 8:53 pm There are RPM's that have secondary marking in the gap between the coat and rim, some secondaries have portions mixed within the date. The general rule is anywhere within the field below the date. All depends, since the mintmark was punched by hand last in all the working dies. Just how tipsy the mint employee was at the time just might have had a thing to do with it.....well, you got one better? Drats, again!
